Dog treat recipes made with fruits and vegetables are packed with wholesome nutrition which makes them super-healthy.
They're also delicious, so both you and your dog will be happy!
You can make vegetarian or vegan, dog treats or you can combine a whole host of different fruits and/or vegetables with meat and/or dairy products. The possibilities are pretty much endless, and dog treat ingredients are easy to find.
There are some common food items, including certain fruits and vegetables, that aren't safe for dogs to eat, so always double check recipes and your own creations to be safe.
You can use applesauce/grated apple, blueberries, banana, dried apricots, cooked sweet potato or canned pumpkin to add natural sweetness to recipes. Cranberries can add a little zing of tart flavor.
Fruits and vegetables also add healthy fiber and are loaded with nutrients, including a wide range of essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, omega fatty acids, enzymes and phytonutrients (these are found only in vegetables). Talk about natural super-foods!
They also have an alkalizing effect on your dog's body which helps decrease inflammation and improve organ function.
Although not strictly either a fruit or a vegetable, herbs are also a great choice to add variety and specific benefits to those healthy treats.
Parsley and mint are both breath freshening and good for the digestive system.
Some of my favorite fruit and vegetable choices when I'm making dog treats include:
- Banana
- Pumpkin
- Blueberries
- Apples
- Carrots
- Zucchini
- Spinach
- Parsley
- Mint
Some dog treat recipes only include fruit, others only vegetables, but many of them use a combination of both, creating well-balanced and nutrient dense goodies that aren't just for fun.
Giving your dog homemade dog treats which have been made with high-quality, healthy ingredients means you're providing him with a delicious, fresh and nutritious addition to his daily diet.
Do Dogs NEED to eat fruit or vegetables?
Experts, researchers and veterinarians are not all in agreement as to whether or not dogs actually NEED to eat their greens (or reds/yellows/oranges etc.)
From an evolutionary standpoint wild dogs do eat them... indirectly and as a result of eating the stomach contents of their prey whose diet includes both fruits and veggies.
While that debate isn't finished, dogs can definitely benefit from eating a range of fruits and vegetables. You can even feed many options raw or dehydrated (buy a dehydrator or use a very low oven setting) and these are excellent choices for dogs who are overweight.
Below I've listed all the recipes on my site which include fruit and/or vegetables.
Because so many of them contain both I haven't separated them into two categories. I hope you enjoy browsing through all the possibilities and that your dog enjoys the 'fruits' of your labor!

Vegetable Dog Biscuits

Vegetable Dog Biscuits
Treat your furry friend to this incredibly tasty, easy to make vegetable dog biscuits that contain six ingredients, and can be made into any shape you wish.
In this recipe, I used a mixture of sweet potato, apple, carrot and pumpkin, though there are many other options you can use as well such as mashed banana, peanut butter, honey or even broth.
Just remember, to consult your veterinarian before feeding your dog any type of homemade dog treats or food as you cant be sure what they could be allergic too. Some dogs can be allergic to peanut butter or even gluten that is found in some flours. Whole wheat flour can have more nutrients in it which is great, though you could use an alternative flour like coconut flour. If your dog is allergic to flour or wheat, you could use rice flour or coconut flour, though these might change the consistency of the dough and you may need to increase the wet ingredients slightly.
Some peanut butters include xylitol which they use to lower the sugar content. DO NOT USE these peanut butter in your dog treats as xylitol is toxic to dogs. Use a natural peanut butter making sure to check the ingredients first.
